Nonesuch Records at SugarHill
(HOUSTON, TEXAS) – October 20th, 2005 – Prestigious record label Nonesuch Records , home to many popular artists including Brian Wilson, Steve Reich, Brad Mehldau, Stephen Sondheim, Wilco and The Magnetic Fields were recently tracking at SugarHill Recording Studios.
Nonesuch Records is releasing a benefit album for those affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The concept-album, titled Our New Orleans, captures the sounds of New Orleans: the songs are chosen by the city’s premier musicians themselves--songs that each of them felt uniquely defined the city. Funds from the sale of the record will be donated to the Habitat for Humanity.
Nonesuch Records invited 15 New Orleans artists, who represented a wide variety of styles, to record in several one-day sessions across the country. The final selection of artists will be confirmed at a later date.
For the SugarHill session, two New Orleans artists were invited to record: the legendary Clarinet player Dr. Michael White and musician Kermit Ruffins. The session was engineered by Piety Street Studios’ Drew Vonderhaar and produced by Mark Bingham and Doug Petty. SugarHill Chief Engineer Andy Bradley and Engineer James Garlington were there to assist on the session. The songs were tracked to Protools HD in SugarHill’s Studio A.
“It’s been unbelievable hearing all these artists stories. Getting to record them is easy but hearing about their experiences surviving the hurricane was very difficult. I guess it feels good to be part of something like this," commented Producer Doug Petty.
