Jimi Hendrix Guitar Hero Records at SugarHill
(HOUSTON, TEXAS) – September 20th, 2005– Another legend has walked through SugarHill Recording Studios’ doors. Blues legend and guitar extraordinaire, Guitar Shorty was busy cutting guitars on Calvin Owen’s (famed blues trumpeter) new album, “The Calvin Owens Show, Volume 2” with SugarHill’s Chief Engineer, Andy Bradley in Studio B.
Guitar Shorty recorded 5 original songs in addition to recording lead vocals on one of the songs titled “Love the Way You Touch Me." Shorty also laid down scratch vocals and lead guitar on a song Calvin Owens will sing titled “I Don’t Want to be Your Dog No Mo’.”
Born in Houston, Guitar Shorty (aka David Kearney) was a musical force since 1957. Shorty is known for teaching his then young brother-in-law Jimi Hendrix to play guitar and eventually becoming a huge inspiration in Hendrix’s guitar playing techniques.
Starting out at the tender age of 16, Guitar Shorty joined Ray Charles and his band for a year. By 17, Shorty was lured away to play with another guitar legend, Guitar Slim, which prompted him to relocate to New Orleans for a few years.
There he played with greats such as T Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner and Little Richard. He returned to the Los Angeles area in 1971 where he received the prestigious W.C. Handy Award.
“Shorty is one of the most fluid blues guitarists creating awesome tones; he also made it amazingly easy to capture them,” commented SugarHill Chief Engineer Andy Bradley.
He recorded several albums for the Black Top label and is currently signed to Alligator Records. He often jams at local clubs with former members of the Eagles and Steely Dan and continues to be an inspiration for many artists and guitarists.
