Calvin Owens shows Houston is the Place to Be at SugarHill Recording Studios

February 8, 2007 —Iconic trumpet player and former B.B. King Band Leader and arranger, Calvin Owens, has recently finished production on the first of two new albums with SugarHill Chief Engineer Andy Bradley.

Calvin’s past recording credits included work as an artist and producer for Memphis’ Kiondict Recording Company, A & R director/studio musician for Peacock Recording Company in Houston and as an arranger for A & M Recording Studios in Los Angeles. He currently works with the Sawdust Alley Preservation Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to Blues preservation.

The first album entitled Houston is the Place to Be features fourteen tracks that span Calvin’s 60-year career. Recording began in July 2006 and both albums were tracked in SugarHill’s Studio A, with overdubs in Studio B and mixed in Studio C. The album features Owens’ 18 member Blues Orchestra in conjunction with an all star roster of musicians including, Marvin Sparks (drums), bassists Keith Vivens and Brennan Nase and adding an international flair with Evelyn Rubio (saxophone), a Mexico City native. In an unusual twist, Owens used recently rediscovered performances that were recorded by Michael Andina of Jet Studios in Brussels, Belgium in the early nineties.

Featured vocalists on this project include Barbara Lynn, who revisits her 1962 hit, “Lose a Good Thing”, while bilingual rock singer, Jesse Flores contributes spanish vocals.. Texas guitar legend, Kenny Cordray contributes his classic ZZ Top hit from the early 1970’s, “Francine” to the track list.

One of Houston’s greats, Pete Mayes, makes a guest vocal and songwriter appearance on the album. Writer and vocalist Rue Davis sings on two original compositions. Guitar whiz Mark May returns as a guest vocalist and lends his guitar. Jabo, the Texas Prince of Zydeco returns with his accordion for another dance classic. Tweed Smith rounds out the guest vocalists on this star-studded album.
